Towering over 5,000 feet, Flat Iron is a plateau peak that juts through the Superstition Mountains. It’s one of central Arizona’s more strenuous hiking destinations, ideal for fitness buffs and outdoor enthusiasts who want a challenge.
Siphon Draw Trail Leads Hikers to Flat Iron
The Siphon Draw Trail, a 2-mile trek to the tip of Flat Iron, is located in the famed Lost Dutchman State Park. This region of the Superstition Wilderness is named after a missing gold mine that’s well-known in local folklore. It's about 40 miles east of Phoenix.
The trail starts off with a well-maintained path and modest hill. After a half mile or so, hikers become dwarfed by large rock formations and boulders that carve out a more jagged path. The trail becomes steeper as Flat Iron emerges from behind a series of red, rugged peaks.
The sharp plateau looks impassable at first, but hikers never encounter the dark vertical façade for which its name. The trail actually loops behind the landmark.
Flat Iron Peak Remains Prominent, Foreboding Throughout Hike
A sheer boulder spanning several dozen feet marks the midpoint to Flat Iron. Hikers must traverse this massive rock to reconnect with the designated trail.
The trek becomes even steeper, and at times, it can be difficult to detect the trail among a mishmash of loose rocks. Keep a look out for faint white dots that have been painted on boulders to serve as trail markers.
Cacti, creosote bushes and palo verdes decorate the path as walls of surrounding peaks slowly close in. About 50 yards from the summit, hikers may need to navigate portions of the trail on all fours.
Urban, Back Country Views From Flat Iron
Those who reach the summit are greeted by narrow, finger-like rock formations that protrude from the Earth. A U-turn reveals a smooth plot of land – the top of Flat Iron.
Successful hikers are rewarded with panorama views of the neighboring mountain ranges and desert foothills that envelop Phoenix’s sprawling cityscape. Facing west from the top, all four corners of the Valley are in view.
